Dear Families,

The month of December has kicked off with a joyful holiday spirit — our students have been excited to come to school in their favorite seasonal wear! It’s been a delight to see their smiles and creativity each day.

• Winter benchmark testing (grades K–5): Students will take DIBELS and MAP assessments this month. These tests help guide classroom instruction and show each child’s academic progress. Results will be used to set goals and plan targeted support so every student can continue to grow. The children are working hard to meet their individual goals. We look forward to celebrating their accomplishments and sharing progress with families.

Reminders:

Please ensure your child arrives to school on time and well-rested on testing days.

• Encourage a healthy routine at home — adequate sleep, nutritious meals, and a calm evening before testing can help students do their best.
• Contact your child’s teacher if you have questions about testing dates or how to support learning at home.

Thanks to all of you, we SMASHED our 2025 Boostherthon Fun Run Goal and set a new school fundraising record, bringing in $53,778!!! 🚀👨‍🚀🛰

 

This is absolutely amazing news and goes to show that though we are now a smaller school, our hearts are bigger than ever for our kids, our teachers, and our school community! Thank you, River Otters! 🦦

 

All remaining prizes are being shipped to the school from Boosterthon in the coming weeks. Once received, PTO will distribute to students. We appreciate your patience! Dear ROE Families,

 

On behalf of the administration, faculty, and staff, I express our sincere gratitude for your extraordinary generosity throughout this month. Your contributions of time, resources, and spirit have had a meaningful impact on our school community.

The month began with our schoolwide food drive. Thanks to your donations and efforts from our student council representatives, over 1,400 items were given to the Salvation Army to support local families. Next, our Boosterthon fundraiser brought the community together in an inspiring demonstration of school pride. The students ran their hearts out during the Fun Run and PTO raised $47,000! These funds will be allocated for outdoor play equipment.

November concluded with our Thanksgiving luncheon, a warm and memorable occasion for students, faculty, and families. We are deeply thankful for our cafeteria staff who prepared the meal as well as our volunteers who helped make the event a success.

Please accept our heartfelt appreciation for your continued support. Your generosity benefits every student and contributes directly to the quality of education and school life.

On behalf of the River Oaks Elementary Student Council, thank you for supporting our annual food drive. The Coastal Carolina University table collected the most items in the college food drive competition. Because of your generous donations, we were able to donate over 1400 items to families in need.

We are proud to announce that River Oaks Elementary was one of this month's Talkin' Trash winners! To celebrate, our 4th grade students enjoyed a fun dance party and were treated to Kona Ice. Congratulations to our students and staff for their efforts!

We have our first winners of the 2025-2026 Talkin’ Trash Waste Reduction & Recycling Contest! October’s winners are Ocean Bay Elementary, Palmetto Bays Elementary, and River Oaks Elementary. Through recycling their food scraps, commingle, and challenge points these schools have bragging rights this month! Each school will receive a plaque and $300 gift card for their school, Earth friendly prizes for teachers and students, and a winning celebration presentation to be aired on TV with our partners, WPDE News 15!!

Horry County Schools (SC) once again proves it has the winning reading stamina and endurance as students dominate Read with Malcolm's READMarathon. HCS students read 8,518,430 pages of books during the 26.2 Days of Reading (designed like a running marathon for reading) in its fourth year participating in the challenge.

 

 

 

HCS, whether in terms of pages read OR minutes read, topped the nation again this year. HCS outperformed school districts with higher numbers of total students participating, showing why it's a marathon not a sprint. Horry County School students, teachers, librarians and media specialists have READ The Distance. This training and peak stamina puts Horry County Schools in a very strong position to compete in READBowl IX January 12 through Super Bowl Sunday.

Veterans Day

As November 11 approaches, our school will proudly honor the veterans in our community who have served with bravery and dedication. To mark this special day, our school honor choir will perform a selection of songs to pay tribute and express our gratitude.

We kindly ask that you submit the names and pictures of any veterans you know so they can be honored during the performance. This is a wonderful way to recognize and celebrate their service as part of our community. Bully Prevention month continues with impactful guidance lessons that promote kindness and respect . We are also excited to Kick off Red Ribbon Week October 27-31, a time dedicated to encouraging healthy choices.

The Student Council's first project this year will be the Fall Food Drive to support the Salvation Army in feeding families in our area. The food drive is November 3-7.

ROE Families,

 

 

It is hard to believe that we are already wrapping up the first quarter of the school year.

Final grades will be in next week and then you can expect your child’s report card to go out on Wednesday, October 29th. Students in grades three through five who are receiving awards will be recognized on Friday, October 31st.

 

 

Recently, teachers have been holding parent-teacher conferences. We have had an amazing turn-out! Thank you for being involved in your child’s education. We truly appreciate your support. If you have not had a chance to schedule a meeting with your child’s teacher, please do so as soon as possible.

 

 

On Wednesday, October 22nd, we join with the Carolina Forest cluster of schools to take part in a family event, “Literacy Under the Lights.” This special event is free to all families. All students will be given a paper bracelet on the day of the event. When you arrive at the Carolina Forest High School Panthers Stadium, you will present the bracelet and that will suffice as entrance into the gate free. We encourage students to bring a book(s) to read. Mrs. Myers will have some paperback books available should your child need a book. Please be sure to arrive early because a fee will be charged after 5:30 pm ($5.00). We look forward to seeing you at this special event.

 

Earlier this month, I had announced that River Oaks Elementary State Report Card results would be released. There has been a delay from the state; we anticipate that we will receive this information sometime in November.

Over the coming weeks, Horry County Schools will be installing the CrisisAlert™ solution on its campus. CrisisAlert is a safety solution by CENTEGIX®, a company that innovates technology to empower and protect people every day. The CENTEGIX team will work during non-instructional time, mostly evenings, to install and test the components of CrisisAlert. These components include strobes that create a mesh network that processes alerts and connects to the school's computers and intercom (where applicable).

 

 

CENTEGIX’s CrisisAlert platform is an incident alerting solution that protects students and staff members by empowering teachers and staff to request help with a simple push of a button on a wearable badge. The solution's simple activation via the CrisisAlert badge, combined with location accuracy and 100% full campus coverage, ensures help will arrive quickly when needed.

 

 

We look forward to working with the CENTEGIX team as they install and deploy CrisisAlert in our schools.

This event is sponsored by the School Nutrition Association of South Carolina, encouraging everyone to wear orange and purple for Clemson or garnet and black for USC in advance of their big rivalry game after Thanksgiving. This spirited event is the perfect opportunity to connect with students, promote healthy eating, and bring some game-day excitement into your cafeterias. All students who eat a school lunch that day will be entered in a school drawing, and each school winner will receive a free beverage and an à la carte snack. Each school winner will be entered into a drawing to serve as our district representative for the statewide drawing, where the state winner will receive a $200 gift card and a T-shirt. #BigThursday25

Dear Families,

Our students have been working incredibly hard in reading! Since the Superintendent's Reading Challenge began, we have read over 230,000 pages together. What an amazing achievement!

Thank you to all families who participated in our school spirit dress-up days. Our students had a blast dressing like Rock Stars this week! Your enthusiasm helps make our school community vibrant and cheerful.

Parent-teacher conferences have now begun and will continue through mid-November. If you have not yet signed up to meet with your child’s teacher, please do so as soon as possible. Your partnership is vital to your child’s success.

We are excited to announce that the South Carolina School Report Cards will be released on October 15th. We look forward to sharing the achievements that are students made during the 2024-2025 school year.

Welcome to the newly elected student council members. The student council will meet on the 15th of every month at 6:30 a.m.

The Otternatos 4th and 5th grade Chorus started on Wednesday, October 2nd. We have 63 students signed up and have started preparing for our Veterans Day concert on November 11th. Our first rehearsal was great!

October is Bullying Prevention Month!

Picking up your child early:

 

 

If you know you will pick your child up early, send a handwritten note in with your student stating the time the student will be picked up. When picking up your student, please go to the Main Office to sign your student out. All students MUST be signed out by a parent or guardian before leaving campus.

 

The latest time for dismissal from the front office is 2 pm.

 

Identification is required to pick up your student. Students will not be released to anyone not listed in PowerSchool as an approved pick-up unless we receive written notification from the parent/guardian.
